Sustainable
production
For a high-quality organic product, a production process that minimizes the impact on the environment is essentially indispensable.
We are therefore very grateful that our mother company, the traditional chocolate factory Weinrich in Herford, East Westphalia, took on ecological responsibility at an early stage. In addition to purchasing CO2e-compensated natural gas since 2021 for the combined heat and power plant, Weinrich has been sourcing electricity from renewable energies since 2012. The systematic environmental and energy management, certified according to ISO 50001 and 14001, leads to the reduction of energy consumption, the conservation of resources and the reduction of water consumption and waste to an acceptable minimum.
In addition, all CO2 emissions that still occur in chocolate production despite numerous environmental and energy management projects (such as employee commutes) are offset by certified climate protection projects in the Global South. Projects such as the „Gola Rainforest National Park“ project in Sierra Leone.

Another milestone: In 2014, Weinrich decided to only use cocoa from 100% sustainably certified sources that meet either organic, Fairtrade or other sustainable standards. The use of genetically modified raw materials and additives has also been deliberately avoided for some time.

Project "Gola Rainforest National Park"
Sierra Leone
The climate protection project "Gola National Park" has set itself the task of preserving the biodiversity of around 70,000 hectares of national park area in Sierra Leone as well as 70,000 hectares of neighbouring peripheral areas, improving the infrastructure there by supporting schools and medical facilities and promoting ecological land use. This includes, among other things, the cultivation of sustainable cocoa.
